Hellbender Research in the Spotlight: Fralin Life Sciences Institute Hosts Virginia Speaker of the House

Last Monday, leaders of the university and the Fralin Life Sciences Institute (FLSI) gathered at Steger Hall to welcome Virginia Speaker of the House Eileen Filler-Corn to Virginia Tech. William Hopkins Receives Virginia’s Highest Faculty Honor

William Hopkins, professor of wildlife in the College of Natural Resources and Environment, has been selected to receive a 2021 Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and Dominion Energy.

The award, which recognizes commitment to excellence in teaching, research, knowledge integration, and public service, is the highest honor awarded to faculty at Virginia colleges and universities.

Bill Hopkins Named Associate Executive Director of Fralin Life Sciences Institute

William Hopkins will join the Fralin Life Sciences Institute at Virginia Tech as associate executive director, effective immediately.

In his new role, Hopkins will assist Matt Hulver, executive director, and his leadership team as they develop and implement the vision and strategic directions for the Fralin Life Sciences Institute to tackle grand life science challenges at the interface of the environment and the human condition.

Sarah DuRant Receives Prestigious NSF CAREER Award

Dr. Sarah DuRant, Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas and Hopkins lab Alum, was recently awarded a 5 year CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, among the most prestigious funding accomplishments available to pre-tenure faculty members.  Dr. DuRant’s work is very timely, as she will be examining the role of maternal behavior in driving bidirectional interactions between infectious diseases and offspring immune phenotype.

Sydney Hope Receives the 2020 Outstanding STEM Dissertation Award from the VT Graduate School

Congratulations to Hopkins Lab alumna, Sydney Hope!  Dr. Hope is the 2020 recipient for the Virginia Tech Graduate School’s Outstanding Dissertation Award in the Science, Technology, and Math category.  Her dissertation was titled “Consequences of avian parental incubation behavior for within-clutch variance in incubation temperature and offspring behavioral phenotypes.”

Sydney Hope Begins Postdoctoral Research Position at the Centre d’Etudes Biologiques de Chizé in France

Dr. Sydney Hope, Hopkins Lab alumna ‘2019, is off France to conduct her postdoctoral research at the Centre d’Etudes Biologiques de Chizé. She is studying how subtle changes to the environment in which animals develop can have significant and long-term consequences for their morphology, physiology, behavior, and survival. Congratulations, Dr. Sydney Hope!

Sydney Hope successfully defended her dissertation on December 3 in Fralin Auditorium. Her public seminar was titled, “Consequences of avian parental incubation behavior for within-clutch variance in incubation temperature and offspring behavioral phenotypes”.  Sydney, a member of the Hopkins Lab, also graduates as a PhD Fellow of the Interfaces of Global Change Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program at Virginia Tech.
